- Why should I have my dog professionally groomed?
While you may decide to take on the time commitment and responsibility of grooming your dog on your own, there are a few good reasons to take your dog to a professional groomer to get the job done:
They have the correct tools.
From various specialty skin products to clippers, bathtubs and adjustable grooming tables designed specifically for pets, professional groomers have a variety of grooming tools at their disposal.
They also maintain a selection of specialty shampoos for dogs with skin irritations, fleas, ticks and allergies. They will even have the right shampoo for dogs that have been sprayed by skunks.
They have a lot of experience handling dogs.
Do you know how to keep your dog safe during grooming? Professional groomers do and they are experienced in handling animals with behavioral issues, senior pets and more.
They take care of the unsavoury tasks.
We love our pets, but when it comes to grooming and cleaning them, certain tasks are far from pleasant.
From shampooing dogs that have been sprayed by a skunk or jumped in mud to removing ticks and fleas and cleaning anal glands, a professional groomer gets the yucky stuff done with minimum fuss - so you don't have to.
- How often should I have my dog groomed?
The answer to this question depends on your dog's coat type, hair length and breed. In most cases, your dog should have a grooming session about once a month.
- How long does a grooming session take?
The duration of a grooming session will depend on the size of your dog, and the length and type of coat. You will also want to ask what types of services are required to groom them.
That said, most grooming sessions at our hospital take between 1 and 2 hours.
- How much does grooming cost?
Depending on your dog's size and breed, and the type of coat they have, the cost of a grooming session will vary. Significant behavioral issues can also impact the cost. To get a better idea of the cost of a grooming session, please contact us for an estimate.
- What are the health benefits of professional grooming?
To ensure your dog stays clean and healthy, grooming is necessary. This task can eliminate ticks, mats, fleas and fur that's been shed but has stuck to your dog's coat. Other health conditions can also be prevented or detected early.
Because mats can lead to knots in your dog's hair, pain and discomfort can follow - something every pet parent wants to prevent. A good brushing will also help keep your dog's coat shiny. We will trim their nails to prevent invasion of germs and curling.
It's important for skin problems or infections to be detected early, and the groomer will know which symptoms to look for. They will find any infections, rashes, lesions, new lumps or inflammations that may be missed by even the most diligent owner.
The groomer may also spot an underlying problem, and the sooner issues are found, the sooner they can be treated.
- How do your groomers handle fearful or aggressive pets?
Our groomers are skilled in handling animals who may become aggravated, stressed or anxious during grooming sessions.
In some cases where an animal is especially aggressive or fearful, sedation during the grooming session may be recommended. However, most of the time our groomer can manage pets with the following measures:
• Offering treats
• A quiet, peaceful environment
• Asking a dog to do something it knows (like 'sit' or 'shake')
• Opening a window or playing music
• Frequent breaks
